Amazon has taken an unexpected step by canceling two of its TV shows, “The Peripheral” and “A League of Their Own,” even after renewing them earlier in the same year.
These original Prime Video series had received strong viewer ratings and were set to continue with their second seasons after being officially renewed in the first quarter of 2023. However, according to a report from Variety on August 18, “The Peripheral” was suddenly axed after just one season, contrary to Amazon’s initial commitment to produce another season of this intricate sci-fi show.
Concurrently, the Variety report also unveiled that “A League of Their Own” was being put on indefinite hold after completing its debut season. The sports-themed comedy-drama was initially given the green light for a second and final season in April.
While Amazon has yet to issue any official statements regarding these cancellations, unnamed sources cited by Variety suggest that the ongoing strikes involving actors and writers played a significant role in these decisions, individuals closely connected to each production explained that due to the widespread work stoppages affecting the entertainment industry, subsequent seasons for both shows would likely not be ready until at least 2025. This timeline was deemed unacceptable by Amazon, leading to a reversal of their earlier renewal decisions.
In response to the cancellation of “A League of Their Own,” the show’s creator and lead actor, Abbi Jacobson, openly criticized Amazon for ending the series, labeling the decision as “cowardly” and expressing her dissatisfaction using strong language. In contrast, the cast and crew of “The Peripheral” have not yet publicly commented on the cancellation of their show.
“The Peripheral,” an adaptation of William Gibson’s acclaimed novel, starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Flynne Fisher, a virtual reality gamer who stumbles upon a futuristic alternate reality within a VR headset, revealing a dystopian future for humanity.
Meanwhile, “A League of Their Own,” created by Jacobson, drew inspiration from the beloved 1992 movie of the same name. The series introduced new characters and storylines while focusing on the origin of the first professional all-female baseball team against the backdrop of World War II.
